Five easy steps to getting started with sustainability reporting
By 2026, many companies in the EU will be required to submit sustainability reports under the new European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). Your company may not be directly subject to the legal requirements at the moment, but you probably have customers who are. They will expect you to report environmental data because you are their supplier.
To help you adapt to the new directives, we have produced a guide to help you get started.
1. Facilitate work with Monitor ERP
When getting started with sustainability reporting, it helps to have an ERP system where much of the information you need is already collected in the system. Monitor ERP is a standard system for manufacturing companies that has a free functionality called Sustainability by Monitor. This feature makes it easier for you to meet the new sustainability reporting standards.

2. Identify and add data
To calculate your carbon footprint, you need to add all current data to Sustainability by Monitor. Use existing sources within your company that may contain information such as energy consumption, emission levels and other relevant details needed to calculate your carbon footprint. There are two methods of collecting data for emissions reporting in Monitor ERP. The first method is based on CO2e values that can be entered into the system when registering supplier invoices.
The second method involves reporting CO2e values manually. You can do this when you need to manage emissions that cannot be linked to supplier invoices.

3. Calculate carbon footprint
The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG) is a global standard used to make it easier for organization to report their greenhouse gas emissions. For ease of reporting, emissions are divided into three categories called Scope 1, 2, 3. Monitor ERP has built-in tools to measure and report emission types per GHG Protocol scope category. The system calculates your products' emissions down to the component level, giving you a detailed overview of how your company's operations impact the environment.

Do you have customers that want you to report environmental data other than carbon emissions?
The concept of sustainability is broad and there is also, for example, reporting on the content of the components that make up your products. This is where REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) comes in. REACH is a regulation that helps you identify risks so you can replace or reduce the use of harmful substances. In Monitor ERP, you can enter and manage all data related to article content, including code, type, description and REACH classification.
4. Analyze your sustainability data
Once all your sustainability data is collected, it's time for analysis. Monitor ERP is compatible with both standard and customized reports for sustainability data. With our web-based Monitor Business Intelligence functionality, you can create your own dashboards for analyzing your environmental data. You can also export reports to Excel or PDF format.

5. Report and benefit from your sustainability data
You can then use the data on customer documentation such as quotes and order confirmations. Your sustainability data can then be used to help you identify areas where improvements need to be made and set goals aimed at reducing your company's carbon footprint.
Concluding thoughts
Getting started with sustainability reporting in Monitor ERP is not difficult. Most of the data is already in place, such as BOM and routing, suppliers, parts etc. You just need to fill out a few fields in basic data and add some data on parts. Most of this can be easily mass updated or imported into the system. Start with what your stakeholders actually want.
Sustainability is here to stay so the more you can do early in the process, the less stressful it will be when you eventually have a hard deadline to meet.
