Change of database platform

Everything you need to know about Monitor ERP's transition to PostgreSQL

Monitor switches to PostgreSQL

SQL Anywhere is approaching the end of its life cycle. As a result, Monitor will replace SQL Anywhere with PostgreSQL, a powerful and flexible database manager, for future development and operation. For you as a customer, this means that your data needs to be migrated to ensure continued support, high security, and the possibility to upgrade to future versions of Monitor ERP.

To help you prepare, we have gathered some important information below. Please read over it so that you understand what this change will mean for you and what steps need taking. Answers to frequently asked questions can also be found at the bottom of the page.

When do we need to migrate to PostgreSQL?

We recommend that you plan and carry out the migration to PostgreSQL as soon as possible. PostgreSQL is the platform that Monitor ERP will continue to develop and support, and it is a requirement for future upgrades, secure operation, and continued support.

  • Version 27.2 (released in February 2027) is planned to be the last version with support for SQL Anywhere.
  • From version 27.3, support for SQL Anywhere will be removed.
  • To upgrade to version 27.3 or later, you need to have migrated to PostgreSQL.

How do we migrate to PostgreSQL?

MONITOR'S CLOUD SOLUTION

For customers using Monitor's cloud solution, Monitor manages the entire migration to PostgreSQL. We will contact you in advance of your planned migration.

If you have your own adaptations, adaptations without an update agreements, or database integrations, you need to review and update these prior to the migration. We will provide test companies on request so that you can conduct the necessary tests.

LOCAL INSTALLATION

If you have a local installation of Monitor ERP, you can perform the migration to PostgreSQL yourself with the help of the PostgreSQL Assistant tool – a tool designed to make the migration as easy as possible. Below you can read more about where to find the tool and how it works.

How Monitor PostgreSQL Assistant works

The PostgreSQL Assistant is a tool to help you prepare and migrate to PostgreSQL.

A prerequisite for the Assistant tool to function correctly is that Monitor ERP is updated to version:
  • 26.4.17
  • 26.5.8
  • or a later version
You can find the tool in the server folder of your Monitor installation.
Please read the instructions provided in the tool before starting your migration process.

Installation and migration

Via the tool you can:

  • Install PostgreSQL or connect to an existing PostgreSQL instance
  • Migrate both your company and any test companies
  • Get a comprehensive overview of the preparations required before migration

For each company, the tool performs a check to ensure that all requirements are met – migration of your company (not a test company) can only be carried out once all mandatory steps have been completed.

Options

Some options need to be updated to versions compatible with PostgreSQL.

The tool will show you which options are affected. Once updated, confirm this by marking the step as completed in the tool.

Options that may be affected include:

  • Machine integration
  • TimeCard
  • WMS integration
  • Monitor Portal
If no options are displayed in the tool, no action is required.

Customized solutions (without update agreement)

If you have your own adaptations that have been developed in-house, purchased through a consultant or from a third party, these need to be reviewed and updated before migration.

This applies, for example, to:

  • Own SQL-based solutions (queries, views, procedures and external programs)
  • Own reports and document variants
  • Own Power BI and Excel solutions via ODBC
  • Adaptations from Monitor without update agreement

We recommend that you make an inventory of all customized solutions and ensure that they will function after migration, especially if they are critical to your operations. You are responsible for updating and testing the adaptations. Once this is done, mark the step as complete in the tool.

Documents and reports with update agreements

For documents and reports covered by update agreements, Monitor is responsible for ensuring that they are compatible with PostgreSQL.

In Monitor PostgreSQL Assistant, you can see whether your documents and reports are ready for PostgreSQL.

Once all documents and reports have been updated, the step will be automatically marked as completed in the tool.

Your documents/reports will be delivered automatically after you have completed your migration and logged into Monitor.

If no documents/reports are displayed in the tool, no action is required.

Adaptations with update agreements

For adaptations covered by update agreements, Monitor is responsible for ensuring compatibility with PostgreSQL.

In order for Monitor to deliver your adaptations, you need to install the Deployment Platform – a web-based solution where you can install, update, and maintain your adaptations. You can start the installation directly via the link in the tool.

Once the installation is complete, fill in the form available in the tool. We will contact you as soon as your adaptation is ready for delivery.

If you require additional support, such as installation, testing, or a joint review, there is an additional cost according to the current price list. Please contact our Adaptations department if you need further assistance.

If no adaptations are displayed in the tool, no action is required.

Frequently asked questions

What benefits will we get with PostgreSQL?

The change includes, among other things, higher operational reliability, a future-proof technical platform, an increased pace of development in upcoming versions, and long-term cost efficiency.

When do we need to migrate to PostgreSQL?

We recommend that you plan and carry out the migration to PostgreSQL in good time. PostgreSQL is the platform that Monitor ERP will continue to be developed and supported for, and it is a requirement for future upgrades, secure operation, and continued support.

We will roll out PostgreSQL gradually to all customers during 2026. You will receive instructions and more information about when it will be possible for your organization to migrate, as well as what preparations may be needed ahead of the transition. To keep you updated, we will continuously share information in our channels, such as Monitor News and on our website.

Which Monitor version is the last to support SQL Anywhere?

Version 27.2 is planned to be the final version supporting SQL Anywhere. From version 27.3 onwards, support for SQL Anywhere will be removed. To upgrade to 27.3 and later, you will need to have migrated to PostgreSQL.

What happens to our customized adaptations?

Adaptations may need to be adjusted to work with PostgreSQL. Monitor will help check and ensure compatibility with adaptations covered by your update agreement at no additional cost. Any in-house or third-party adaptations need to be inventoried and updated by you; help from a consultant can be booked if needed.

Which adaptations or integrations aren't covered by an update agreement?

Below are examples of solutions for which you, as a customer, are responsible for ensuring compatibility with PostgreSQL.

  • Custom SQL queries
  • Custom document variants with SQL
  • Customized reports
  • Custom database views and procedures
  • Custom Excel solutions via ODBC
  • Custom Power BI solutions via ODBC
  • Custom external programs with SQL
  • Adaptations created by a Monitor consultant not covered by an update agreement
What help can we get with adaptations that are not covered by an update agreement?

If you require assistance, it is possible to book time with a consultant via our adaptation team. We can perform quality assurance of your adaptations on a chargeable basis and, where possible, offer an update agreement and assume responsibility for the adaptation. Please note that each adaptation is assessed individually and decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.

Do we need to test before we switch over?

Yes, especially if you have your own adaptations or database connections that are critical to your operations. For customers using Monitor’s cloud solution, Monitor can provide test companies upon request for any necessary testing.

Will the Monitor API be affected by the switch?

The Monitor API will not be affected by the transition from SQL Anywhere to PostgreSQL.

What will happen to the Web Shop option?

As the webshop option is being phased out, it will not be made compatible with PostgreSQL. We are happy to help you find an alternative, contact us or read more about our e-commerce integrations.

We use Monitor’s cloud solution – do we need to do anything?

Monitor will contact you ahead of the migration and manage the process. If you have your own adaptations (not covered by an update agreement) or database connections, these need to be reviewed and updated before the migration. Monitor can provide test companies upon request.

We run Monitor ERP with Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL) – are we affected?

No. MSSQL is not currently affected by the transition from SQL Anywhere to PostgreSQL, and no action is required.
